In keeping with our mission of sharing music and stories of people who are making a difference with their art, this week week we present a special edition of Art of the Song called “The American Protest Song.” Throughout our country’s history, music has been inextricably associated with movements toward social change… freedom from slavery, the labor movement, civil rights, anti-war, women’s rights, human rights, and now, resistance to the current administration. As we began preparing this show, we realized that in a one-hour program we could barely scratch the surface of the vast repertoire of American protest songs. While many important songs had to be left out, we tried to capture the essence of the art form by giving a historical context, moving through time, and finishing up with songs that deal with our current political situation.
